How We Harvest Our Miscanthus

Harvesting of miscanthus takes place every spring, once the tall, bamboo-like grass has changed from a vibrant green to a golden-brown hue. This natural colour change signals that the plant has completed its annual cycle, and the sugars produced during the growing season have returned to the underground rhizomes.

These rhizomes act as storage organs, holding both energy and carbon to support regrowth the following year. This biological process is a key part of what makes miscanthus such a sustainable crop. It is a perennial plant, requiring no replanting each year, and it thrives on low-quality land with minimal inputs.

How We Process & Package Our Miscanthus

After harvesting, the miscanthus is transported to our state-of-the-art on-site farm processing plant. Here, the raw material undergoes a thorough preparation process. It is first chopped to a uniform size and then passed through a triple dust extraction system to create a cleaner, more comfortable product - ideal for Animal Bedding.

The cleaned material is then compressed into high-density bales, helping to reduce storage and transport volume. Each bale is meticulously wrapped in fully recyclable plastic that contains 30% post-consumer waste (PCW), further contributing to our commitment to sustainability. Once packaged, the bales are either boxed individually or stacked on pallets, ready for delivery.
