What is Miscanthus Bedding?

Miscanthus Bedding is made from a fast-growing grass, also known as elephant grass. It’s 100% natural, ultra-absorbent, and biodegradable — ideal for horses, chickens, cows, sheep, generally all farm animals, and small animals/pets.

Why choose miscanthus over straw or wood shavings?

Miscanthus absorbs up to 3x its weight in moisture. Its low dust levels reduce the risk of respiratory issues for animals and handlers. Miscanthus is a long-lasting solution, which requires fewer top-ups, saving you time and money. It is also eco-friendly, as it is sustainably grown and composts quickly after use.

What animals is miscanthus suitable for?

An endlessly versatile solution, miscanthus is ideal for horses and ponies, chickens, ducks, game birds, sheep, goats, alpacas, cattle, calves, dogs, rabbits, and other small animals.

How much bedding do I need?

For horses, a typical 12ft x 12ft stable requires 5–6 bales for a deep bed, then 1–2 bales per week for maintenance. For poultry or small animals, start with a 2–4″ layer, adding more as needed depending on moisture. For farm animals, make up as you would normally or start off with a thin layer covering the whole area and top up as needed to form a deep litter.

Is miscanthus dusty?

No. Miscanthus is naturally low in dust, making it a great option for animals with respiratory sensitivity and for indoor use.

How do I dispose of used Miscanthus Bedding?

Used bedding breaks down quickly and makes excellent compost or mulch. It is ideal for farms and gardens and can go straight onto the muck heap.

Is miscanthus safe if animals eat it?

Yes, miscanthus is non-toxic. However, it is very fibrous and unpalatable, so most animals do not try to eat it.
