Good for Horse Health

“Bedding has been down a week and I’ve found it much better than shavings. Easy to muck out as the bedding falls through a fork, so less waste. Very absorbent, so only
need to remove wet area every few days. My mare coughs at the slightest bit of dust and she’s been fine with this. I’m very pleased with this product and highly recommend it.”

Why Choose Miscanthus?

Miscanthus is a superior alternative to other commonly found Animal Bedding types, including wood shavings, wood pellets, or hemp. Here are some of the main advantages of Miscanthus Bedding, which make it stand head and shoulders above its competitors:

Superior Absorbency

Miscanthus is as much as 3 times more absorbent than wood shavings and a whopping 5 times more absorbent than straw. In addition, its open structure enables it to speed up airflow. By wicking away moisture and drying out quickly, this helps prevent compacting. Miscanthus can also dehydrate bacteria, which is beneficial to bird and animal health.

Value for Money & Versatile

Miscanthus Bedding is perfect for animals in the equine, cattle, and poultry sectors. However, it’s also suitable for use with pets and small animals, such as rabbits, hamsters, and guinea pigs, plus cats, dogs, sheep, and donkeys, among others. The superior absorbency of miscanthus means you’ll need smaller amounts of bedding in the long run, saving you money.

Exceptionally Low Dust Animal Bedding

Our Miscanthus Animal Bedding for Bangor is produced using a thorough, triple-extraction process, making it a better choice for humans and animals who struggle with respiratory problems (such as COPD, allergies, and sensitivities) than similar ‘dust-free’ options.

Ammonia & Odour Control

Thanks to its unique structure, miscanthus can wick away and absorb liquids in its inner core. At the same time, it traps ammonia and creates a dry, odourless environment that can benefit the respiratory health of animals and humans.

Reducing Digestive Issues

Miscanthus is virtually unpalatable, which means animals that might otherwise enjoy munching on their bedding would be unable to eat it. In turn, this prevents digestive issues that could harm your animals’ health.

Excellent Thermal Properties

Due to its excellent insulation features, Miscanthus Bedding can keep your animals warm and comfortable during winter. Simultaneously, it offers support for animals by eliminating the common ‘sinking down’ effect, which usually happens with other Animal Bedding types.

Less Waste & Easier Mucking Out

Because there’s less waste and mucking out involved, miscanthus can reduce your bills and save you time. As it is ‘semi-clumping’ bedding that lasts longer than similar products, droppings and wet spots are simple to find. Lastly, miscanthus is less heavy and easy to spread, so workers can spend more time attending to other things.

Natural & Compostable with No Seeds

A 100% natural, seedless product, with smaller muck heaps than those created by wood shavings and straw, miscanthus can make nitrogen-rich compost in just 6-8 weeks. What’s more, miscanthus ensures undesirable seeds won’t sprout. It doesn’t strip the soil of nitrogen either, minimising the need for excessive reliance on fertilisers.

"I've used chopped straw bedding for a few years & found it worked better & worked out cheaper than shavings. But Nanhoron Miscanthus takes the absorbency to the next level! Absolutely love it, the bed sits still better, absorbs better/more and works out even cheaper again... So so happy with the switch."

About Nanhoron Farms

Animal_Bedding_-_Nanhoron_Tractors_-_Nanhoron_Farms

Nanhoron Farms lies at the heart of the beautiful Llŷn Peninsula, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in North Wales, an hour’s drive from Bangor. A part of the landscape for generations and once renowned for its varied livestock, the Nanhoron Estate has long held a respected place within the local community.

Today, we proudly continue this heritage by rearing a rare-breed herd of Hereford cattle alongside a flock of Welsh Mule sheep, while also championing sustainability through the growth of miscanthus.

This environmentally responsible crop plays an essential role in our forward-thinking farming approach, forming the basis of our premium Animal Bedding. Deeply rooted in community values, our business supports local areas including Pwllheli, Bangor, and the...

Our Herefords & Sheep

Animal_Bedding_-_Hereford_in_Field_-_Nanhoron_Farms

Alongside our primary focus on Animal Bedding, Nanhoron Farms is also home to a valued herd of Hereford Cattle and around 550 Welsh Mule Sheep. A naturally hornless form of the traditional British breed, Polled Herefords are well known for their calm temperament, straightforward outdoor calving that creates a safer start for newborn calves, and their excellent ability to convert grass into quality beef. Grazing across our varied landscape, this low-input herd is able to flourish in a natural environment.

Renowned for their strong maternal traits, hardiness, and impressive lambing performance, Welsh Mule sheep are ideally suited to spring lambing. Using a Texel tup as the terminal sire, we produce approximately 900 high-quality lambs each year.

Sustainability

Animal_Bedding_-_Solar_Panel_Sustainability_-_Nanhoron_Farms

Everything we do at Nanhoron Farms starts and ends with conservation and sustainability. We generate around 498 kWp of electricity using 1,500 roof-mounted solar panels, powering most of our farm. Fed to the national grid, the surplus energy supplies over 250 homes each year and brings down our annual carbon footprint by a massive 340,000 kilograms. We also use a biomass boiler, which utilises locally sourced, recycled wooden pallets to heat the estate’s buildings.

Our decision to grow miscanthus also contributes to our sustainability efforts. It allows us to provide environmentally friendly Animal Bedding to Bangor and the rest of the UK, while enriching our farm soil at the same time.
