Good for Horse Health

“Bedding has been down a week and I’ve found it much better than shavings. Easy to muck out as the bedding falls through a fork, so less waste. Very absorbent, so only
need to remove wet area every few days. My mare coughs at the slightest bit of dust and she’s been fine with this. I’m very pleased with this product and highly recommend it.”

Why Choose Miscanthus?

Miscanthus is a fantastic alternative to other Animal Bedding types, such as hemp and wood shavings. Let’s take a closer look at the main benefits of Miscanthus Bedding, which make it stand out from its competitors:

Superior Absorbency

Miscanthus is 3 times more absorbent than wood shavings and 5 times more absorbent than straw. With a more open structure than hemp, which allows it to regulate airflow, wick away moisture, and dry out quickly, it doesn’t compact. Miscanthus also dehydrates bacteria, benefiting animal and bird health.

Value for Money & Versatile

Highly versatile, miscanthus is suitable for use with animals in the equine, poultry, and cattle sectors. It’s also a great solution for small animals and pets, such as rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, rats, and mice – plus dogs, goats, sheep, donkeys, and others. Thanks to the plant’s superior absorbency, you require less bedding in the long run, saving you money.

Exceptionally Low Dust Animal Bedding

Owing to our thorough triple-extraction process, our Miscanthus Bedding is better for animals and humans with respiratory issues like COPD, allergies, and sensitivities than other products advertised as ‘dust-free’.

Ammonia & Odour Control

Thanks to its structure, miscanthus can wick away liquid and absorb it in its inner core. At the same time, it traps ammonia and creates a dry, odourless environment that helps improve the respiratory health of humans and animals.

Reducing Digestive Issues

Since miscanthus is almost completely unpalatable, animals that tend to chew on their bedding find it much less appealing than straw. As a result, it doesn’t cause harmful digestive issues that might endanger the animals’ health.

Excellent Thermal Properties

Miscanthus Bedding has excellent insulation properties, so your animals stay warm and comfortable during the cold winter months in Abergele. Because it is quite robust, miscanthus also provides plenty of structural support and stops ‘sinking down’, a drawback of other types of Animal Bedding.

Less Waste & Easier Mucking Out

As it reduces muck-out times and helps minimise waste, miscanthus can save you time as well as money. Due to the fact that it’s ‘semi-clumping’ and lasts longer than other solutions, you can easily find wet spots and droppings. Miscanthus is also lightweight and easy to spread, allowing workers to spend more time on other tasks.

Natural & Compostable with No Seeds

100% natural and seedless, miscanthus creates nitrogen-rich compost in as little as 6-8 weeks, with considerably smaller muck heaps than those created by wood shavings and straw. What’s more, miscanthus doesn’t extract nitrogen from the soil, so you have to use less fertilisers. You also won’t need to deal with undesirable sprouting seeds.

"I've used chopped straw bedding for a few years & found it worked better & worked out cheaper than shavings. But Nanhoron Miscanthus takes the absorbency to the next level! Absolutely love it, the bed sits still better, absorbs better/more and works out even cheaper again... So so happy with the switch."

About Nanhoron Farms

Nanhoron Farms is located on the captivating Llŷn Peninsula, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in North Wales, an hour’s drive from Abergele. As an important part of the region for many decades, the Nanhoron Estate has a long and celebrated presence in the local community and was historically famous for its diverse livestock.

Today, we continue to preserve this cherished tradition by raising a rare-breed herd of Hereford Cattle and a flock of Welsh Mule Sheep.

Simultaneously, we focus on sustainability by growing miscanthus.
Of vital importance in our advanced farming practices, miscanthus is used to produce our premium, all-natural Animal Bedding. Our business is strongly rooted in communal values, serving both local communities in Pwllheli,...

Our Herefords & Sheep

Whilst Animal Bedding is the main focus of Nanhoron Farms, we are also the home of prized Hereford Cattle and around 550 Welsh Mule Sheep. A hornless variation of the native UK breed, Polled Herefords are well known for their friendly nature, easy outdoor calving that creates a safer environment for newborn calves, and excellent grass-to-beef conversion. By roaming our beautiful landscape, this low-input herd can thrive naturally.

Owing to their strong mothering instincts, resilience, and high lambing rates, Welsh Mule Sheep are ideal for spring lambing. Using a Texel tup as the terminal sire, we are able to produce around 900 quality lambs each year.

The ewes and newborn lambs benefit from clean, dry pens, which are made extra comfortable thanks...

Sustainability

Sustainability and conservation are central to everything we do at Nanhoron Farms. We have over 1,500 roof-mounted solar panels, which generate around 498 kWp of electricity, powering much of our farm. By feeding the surplus energy to the national grid, we help supply over 250 homes annually, reducing our carbon footprint by as much as 340,000 kilograms per year. To further boost our sustainability practices, we use a biomass boiler, which utilises locally sourced recycled wooden pallets to heat estate buildings.

However, this is only the beginning. By growing miscanthus, we can produce eco-friendly Animal Bedding for Abergele and enrich our farm soil. For over 20 years, we have been part of Glastir - the Welsh Government’s conservation programme - protecting habitats through dry stone wall...
